I have tried a DIY version of the Covox Speech Thing.

The driver that worked in Windows 95 was from Vogons: Covox Speech Thing!!!. Covoxwin.zip from there worked. (Only the LPT driver is needed)

I think I had to disable my other sound card (Windows 95 - disabled loading sound card on boot) to make the Covox work.

I tried the DIY Covox Speech Thing clone on the Toshiba T3200SXC. It works in Windows 95, but it doesn't play without pauses and it makes everything else very slow (mouse not moving etc). 386SX at 20 MHz is just too slow. Probably more useful in DOS and on faster systems.

The downside is that very few DOS games and programs support Covox compatible devices.
